How We Test AI Companions
Reviews are only useful if you can see the work behind them. This page explains exactly how we put AI companion apps through their paces before we recommend anything, and how we keep those verdicts current.
We test every app hands-on
We don't rate an app from its marketing page. Each one is set up like a real user would set it up, then used over a sustained period across both web and mobile. That means starting fresh conversations, building a personality, returning days later to see what the companion remembers, and pushing on the edges where cracks usually show.
What we score
Conversation quality
Does the companion hold a natural thread, pick up tone, and stay in character, or does it slip into canned, repetitive replies? This is the single biggest factor in whether an AI boyfriend feels worth coming back to.
Memory and personalization
We check whether details actually stick between sessions, and how much real control you have over looks, personality, and the way he talks.
Privacy and data handling
We read the privacy terms so you don't have to, and note what an app collects, what it shares, and how clearly it explains itself. Our own stance on data is set out in our editorial standards and our Privacy Policy.
Free tier and pricing
We flag what you can do without paying and what sits behind a subscription, so the value is clear before you commit.
Safety and wellbeing
We favor apps that treat companionship as a supplement to human relationships, not a replacement, and we say so plainly in every review.
How we weight the score
Conversation quality and privacy carry the most weight, because they decide whether an app is both enjoyable and trustworthy. Personalization, pricing, and safety round out the picture. No single great feature can offset a serious privacy problem.
Keeping reviews current
These apps update quickly. We revisit our verdicts and refresh the "last updated" date whenever a meaningful change lands, so a review reflects the app as it is now, not as it was at launch.
Independence
Our testing process is not influenced by the companies we cover. Some links on the site are affiliate links, which we explain openly in our Affiliate Disclosure. They never change a score or a recommendation.
